Global Trade Idea: Airbnb (ABNB US, BBETNC, BBETNQ) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein & Khumbulani Kunene

Airbnb is a one of the most recognisable names in the global travel and accommodation industry, operating a scalable platform that connects millions of hosts and guests without owning physical properties.

Founded in 2008, the company operates in more than 220 countries and regions worldwide and offers a variety of listings, including vacation rentals, cabins, and beach houses. Airbnb has expanded beyond traditional accommodation and now offers additional services such as private chefs, massages, and training sessions.

Technically, a developing symmetrical triangle pattern presents a promising investment opportunity for the stock (see the black converging trendlines on the main chart). This pattern represents a period of consolidation where supply and demand for the stock are gradually converging, creating a sequence of lower highs and higher lows. As this structure narrows, its often followed by a breakout as market indecision resolves. When the price tests support and volumes stabilise, it can provide a favourable risk-reward setup for potential upside.

Stability around a key historical value zone indicates solid buying interest (see the insert on the main chart). The price distribution chart for ABNB over the past five years shows that the current price of around $122.89 lies within one of the most frequently traded zones. This may reflect a consolidation base where buyers and sellers reach temporary balance before renewed directional movement occurs.

Fading downside price momentum per the MACD histogram and the recent upward trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator supports our bullish view.

Please note that this trade can also be executed via the JSE listed FNB ETNs BBETNC and BBETNQ.

Buy/Sell Rationale:

Technical Analysis:

    • The lower panel shows occurrences of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) bullish divergence signal. A reading of one indicates when such a divergence occurred. A bullish divergence signal on the RSI typically occurs when the share price continues to record lower lows, yet the RSI indicator forms higher lows. This discrepancy highlights a weakening of downside momentum and reflects the gradual return of buying interest.
    • Our recommended entry range is $119.00 to $127.00, or as close as possible to $122.89 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $141.00, representing ~14.7% upside from current levels.
    • According to forward calculations of the RSI, the stock will be overbought at $150.00, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is the end of December 2025, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $116.00, or 5.6% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $127.00.

Fundamental view:

    • Airbnb operates as a single segment business but is organised around three strategic priorities in its operations, namely: the core hosting service, global expansion, and new offerings like experiences.
    • There is secular support for the sharing economy, and this is not expected to change anytime soon, which further solidifies the company's long-term growth prospects.
    • Like Google, Airbnb's brand has grown to become a verb. "Let's Airbnb a place" has become as commonplace as "just Google it". Airbnb's brand recognition is substantial.
    • The company has partnered with numerous organisations to drive growth and brand awareness, including FIFA at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Strava and Delta Air Lines.
    • Airbnb recently acquired AI startup, Gameplanner.AI, which is set to enhance Airbnb's platform and integrate more AI-powered features for a personalised experience.
    • The company has scope to gain market share from the likes of Booking.com and Expedia due to the attractiveness and simplicity of its platform and comparatively low platform fees.
    • In recent 2Q25 results, adjusted diluted earnings per share came in at $1.03 (2Q24: $0.86) and revenue increased 13% y/y to $3.1 billion. This was driven by solid growth in nights stayed, a 3% increase in average daily rates (ADR), and the timing of Easter. Strong top-line growth was complimented by disciplined cost management that supported margin expansion. A hefty share buy-back was proposed on the back of strong cash generation.
    • Management noted, however, that 3Q25 will face a tougher y/y comparison that is expected to extend into 4Q25.
    • From a risk perspective, the company can be exposed to regulatory risk, intense competition, economic volatility, safety and security issues, and negative community impacts.
