A stop payment is an instruction given by you to FNB to stop a future debit order from being processed against your FNB account.
A stop order is recurring payment instruction to pay someone while a stop payment is an instruction to prevent a debit order from being processed
You must place a stop payment at least 5 business days before the debit order action (payment) date. If the debit order was not stopped at least 5 business days before it was scheduled to go off your account, it may still be processed. In that case, the request to stop a debit order will be effective from the following month.
Stop payments are only valid for 12 months. You must contact the creditor/ service provider to ensure the Debit Order is cancelled. If the Debit Order is not cancelled with the creditor/service provider it may be reinstated and processed after the 12month period
FNB may charge you fees for the stop payment instruction, even if the stop payment instruction was not successful. Visit www.fnb.co.za to view FNB's latest pricing guide.
If you stop a payment, you may be in breach if there is a valid contract between you and your creditor/service provider. This could have a negative impact on your credit rating and future credit applications. FNB is not responsible for any losses that may arise as a result of the stopped payment or you providing FNB with incorrect information
Yes, you can call the number at the back of your card or visit your nearest branch.
If you stop a debit order with a amount range (e.g. R1 - R1000). All debit orders from the same service provider within the amount range you select will be stopped. It is important to note that if a debit order is stopped based on an amount range, no new debit orders from the company/service provider using that specified abbreviated name e.g. the first 10 characters on your reference (including valid debit orders) will be processed through your account for a period of up to 12 months. If a stop payment is placed and the creditor/service provider changes any details pertaining to the debit order, for example, the abbreviated name, the first 10 characters on your reference or if the amount is different from the one you specified the debit order will go through. Should you sign up for another debit order with the company, please ensure the stop payment is deleted by calling the number on the back of your card.
When permission is given by the accountholder to a third party (e.g. company/service provider) to collect money from your bank account by giving such person a written, telephonic or electronic mandate to do so. Debit orders are payment instructions used for the monthly collection of premiums for a set date on investment policies, subscriptions, etc.
You can dispute a debit against your account for the following reasons: You did not authorise the debit order, this could be due to an act of fraud. The debit order is in contravention of your authority, this means either the amount or date is incorrect. You have previously instructed the third party (e.g. company/service provider) to cancel the debit order. The debit order was previously stopped.
An unauthorised debit order is one that has gone off an account without a valid agreement between you and the third party (e.g. company/service provider) that submitted the debit order. If an unauthorised debit order has gone off your account you can dispute(reverse) the debit order and thereafter, place a stop payment on that debit order to prevent the company/service provider from collecting from your account in future.
No, customers at all banks are affected by unauthorised debit orders.
You may have unknowingly provided the details to the company; for example, you thought that you were completing a quote for a product or you may have captured your banking details on a company's website. The third party (e.g. company/service provider) may have made an error. For example, the company/service provider may have captured an account number incorrectly or may not have updated their systems before processing the debit orders.
If you are unable to reverse a debit order this means that you have entered an agreement with the company/service provider and you may have authenticated yourself using your card and pin or the debit order was in line with what you had authenticated via your preferred channel. In this case, you would have to contact the company/service provider directly to query the debit order.
If you dispute a debit order, you may be in breach if there is a valid contract between you and your creditor/service provider. This could have a negative impact on your credit rating and future credit applications. FNB is not responsible for any losses that may arise because of the disputed debit order or you providing FNB with incorrect information. FNB is not a party to the contract between you and the creditor/service provider. As your bank, it is important that FNB process any debits in compliance with Payments Association of South Africa.
FNB may charge you a fee for the dispute instruction, even if the dispute instruction was not successful. Visit www.fnb.co.za and view FNB's latest pricing guide.
