Trade Ideas

Global Trade Idea: Mastercard Inc. (MA US) - BUY

Mastercard Inc. provides financial transaction processing services which offer payment processing for credit and debit cards, electronic cash, automated teller machines, and travellers checks.

While macroeconomic challenges prevail, the company remains one of the world's leading global payments technology companies with a broad geographic footprint connecting a wide-ranging userbase through a web of technologies. Mastercard remains focused on executing on its innovative strategies and acquisitions to gain an edge against its competitors and enhance its long-term growth prospects.

Technically an incomplete ascending triangle pattern makes the stock attractive as an investment opportunity (see the black converging trendline on the main chart as well as the insert). When the stock price breaks through the upper range of this pattern, it may experience a sharp upward move, which can offer a further buying opportunity.

The expectation is for the price to remain inside the ascending triangle pattern. However, the pattern's reliability may be affected by the broader market conditions and the specific sector in which the stock operates.

Fading downside momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator supports a bullish bias.

The stock remains above its 200-day simple moving average which is generally considered a positive sign for the price trend.

Relative Strength Index (RSI) forward calculations suggest that the share will be in overbought territory around $500, which classifies our profit target as realistic.

We suggest a low at-risk allocation for this trade and a medium technical rating for this analysis.

Buy or Sell Rationale

Technical Analysis :

  • A sideways movement in the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator - which uses volume flow to predict stock price changes - indicates that money remains in the stock.
  • The lower panel shows occurrences of the Morning Star Japanese Candlestick pattern (also see the insert), indicated by a reading of 1.
  • This pattern suggests that after a period of selling pressure, the stock has found a bottom. The small-bodied second candle indicates indecision, and the gap from the previous period's close shows that the selling pressure is losing momentum. The third candle's gap up from the previous period's close and the long green body show that buyers have taken control and are pushing the price higher.
  • Take note of how previous instances of this pattern have been followed by an upward move in the price. We expect a similar situation to occur.
  • Our recommended entry range is between $345 and $360, or as close as possible to the current reference price of $354.44. A fall below the suggested entry range suggests that a structural change in the trend may have occurred and provides reason to negate the trade idea.
  • Our upside target is set at $395 (~11.4% upside potential from current levels), which is at the upper range of the ascending triangle pattern.
  • Time to exit is end-May 2023 with the option of extending the trade for a longer period if required.
  • A fall below $340 (~4.1% below current levels), which is at the mid-range of the ascending triangle pattern, is a major concern for downside potential and is recommended as a stop-loss.

Long-term fundamental view:

  • Mastercard operates and reports financial information in a single segment, Payment Solutions.
  • Revenue is generated through various subsegments including transaction processing activities (~35% of revenue), domestic assessments (~30%), cross-border volume fees (~15%), other revenues (~20%).
  • The company processes transactions in more than 150 currencies across more than 210 countries and territories. North America is Mastercard's largest market, accounting for ~35% of revenue.
  • In terms of financial performance, Mastercard posted a better-than-expected 4Q22 result with both top and bottom-line metric coming in ahead of consensus forecasts.
  • Revenue in FY23 is expected to continue to grow in the low teens, driven by healthy consumer spending, rising digitisation of payments, cross-border flows and new flows from its open banking and embedded finance solutions.
  • Management expects operating expenses to grow at a slower pace than revenue, and plans to maintain the compan's positive operating leverage, even if the economic backdrop worsens.
  • In terms of downside risks, the group is immediately exposed to reduced consumer spending and transacting, reduced global purchase volumes - particularly cross-border - in the wake of macro shocks.
  • Broader concerns include economic downcycles, rampant inflation, pressure on consumers' purchasing power, aggressive competition from alternative payment processing providers, increased pricing pressure and innovation from rivals such as Visa and American Express.
