FNB 100 CapitalPreserver Participation 1 (ZAR)

FNB 100 CapitalPreserver Participation 1 (ZAR)

The recent investment environment across the globe has been characterised by heightened volatility, presenting extremely cumbersome and turbulent conditions for investors. This, paired with domestic market conditions and economic constraints in South Africa (such as load-shedding and a high inflationary environment), has resulted in market participants adopting a highly cautious or conservative approach with regards to investing.

Structured products provide an excellent tool for investors, especially those with a risk-adverse framework, to take part in market movements. In times of market uncertainty and volatile equity markets, many investors look for stability in their returns. Hence, these products give clients an opportunity to benefit from rising markets, or in the worst case get back their capital.

The FNB 100 CapitalPreserver Participation 1 (ZAR) is a three-year rand structured investment that provides 100% capital protection at maturity, along with exposure to developed equity markets (MSCI World Index) and the USD/ZAR exchange rate. The MSCI World Index captures large and mid-cap representation across 23 developed markets with 1 509 constituents - the index covers approximately 85% of the free float-adjusted market capitalisation in each country.

The overall return is equal to the growth in the underlying index, multiplied by a participation factor. For illustration purposes, if the client is quoted an uncapped participation factor of 110% and the MSCI World index returned 120% over the term, the growth will be equal to 110% x 120% = 132% (before taking the USD/ZAR exchange rate movement into account). It is important to note that if the performance of the index is flat or negative for the term of the product, the investor is still guaranteed 100% of their initial capital.

On maturity (after three years), the investor will receive:

  • The full rand investment amount, plus 110% participation in any growth on the MSCI World Index.
  • Any positive index performance will also be exposed to the USD/ZAR exchange rate and the final return will be adjusted accordingly. If the rand depreciates against the US dollar, returns will be enhanced. If the rand appreciates against the US dollar, returns will be reduced.
  • The investment amount will always be 100% protected on maturity, irrespective of currency or index movements.

Example: A client invests R1 million into the FNB 100% CapitalPreserver Participation 1 (ZAR) and the MSCI World Index goes up by 45% over the three years. At maturity, the client will receive R 1 459 000 [R1 million + (R1 million x (110% x 45%))] = R 1 495 000).

*USD/ZAR rate has remained constant in this example. If USD/ZAR was to appreciate/depreciate, it would impact the 45%.

An initial once off fee of 3% will be charged on the invested amount. This fee will not affect the guarantee and invested amount within the product as the fee is accounted for in the pricing of the participation. No additional distributor fees will be applied.

Back-test of MSCI World Index

The graph below shows that the MSCI World Index has delivered a positive performance over a three year rolling period since 2012. This strong track record, coupled with the enhanced returns through the 110% participation factor provides investors with an attractive investment opportunity.

Advantages and benefits

  • Clients are provided with exposure to upside potential on the MSCI, while minimising downside risk with the capital protection structure (100% guaranteed) of this product.
  • The note will provide investors with access to leading global companies and sectors over the three-year investment term that they would not have access to without the costs and complexities of investing directly offshore.
  • Returns on the MSCI World Index are multiplied by a participation factor, providing investors with overall growth more than the index performance during the term.
  • The product will complement domestic portfolios and provide global diversification given the concentrated nature of the SA market.
  • The note also provides additional rand hedge benefits.

Risks

  • The strategy is exposed to global equities, should global equities underperform there is an opportunity cost attached to the capital invested.
  • Rand volatility could adversely impact performance.

FNB Stockbroking and Portfolio Management view

  • This is a 100% capital protected on maturity investment linked to the MSCI World Index, with uncapped participation. Investors who are looking for growth through exposure to a global index, while minimising the risk of losing capital, can consider investing in structured products as part of their overall investment strategy.
  • This is also a solution to offshore investing without eroding the investor's asset transfer limits or the additional complexities associated with investing offshore.
