FNB EURO STOXX 50® ETN

By Pritu Makan

The FNB ETN provides investors with ZAR-denominated exposure to the EURO STOXX 50® Index, which represents the performance of the 50 largest blue-chip companies across 20 super-sectors in the eurozone, through an exchange-traded note (ETN) listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The index captures ~60% of the free float-adjusted market capitalisation of the broader EURO STOXX Total Market Index (TMI) and is weighted by free-float market capitalisation.

Investment strategy

The index offers targeted exposure to leading blue-chip companies in the eurozone. This makes it a concentrated yet diversified vehicle for gaining exposure to the largest and most liquid companies in developed European markets. It provides diversified sector exposure, with significant allocations to Technology, Banks, and Industrial Goods & Services, complemented by Consumer Products & Services, Energy, Insurance, Healthcare, Utilities, Chemicals, and Automobiles & Parts.

Advantages

    • Clients benefit from the flexibility of an exchange-traded investment, providing efficient access to the largest and most liquid and often mature eurozone companies through a single transaction, without the administrative complexity of direct offshore investing.
    • The EURO STOXX 50® is one of the most liquid benchmarks in Europe and serves as an underlying for a wide range of financial products (including futures, options, and exchange-traded funds (ETFs)), enhancing tradability and pricing efficiency.
    • Many European firms generate a significant portion of revenues internationally, providing indirect exposure to global growth (including emerging markets).
    • Europe has well-established legal systems, corporate governance standards, and investor protections, which underpin long- term investment confidence.
    • Europe is at the forefront of themes such as energy transition, sustainability (ESG), advanced manufacturing, and green technologies, making the region thematically well placed for long-term trends.

Risks

    • Europe has historically experienced slower structural growth compared to other developed markets such as the United States, and some emerging markets, which can weigh on long-term equity returns.
    • The region consists of multiple countries with differing fiscal policies and political dynamics, creating risks around elections, regulation, and inter-regional cohesion.
    • The index itself is heavily concentrated in France and Germany (~63%), meaning the index performance is largely driven by the economic and policy conditions of these two countries. This inhibits broad-based geographic diversification and increases exposure to country-specific risks.
    • Proximity to geopolitical tensions (e.g., Eastern Europe, energy supply shocks) can create volatility in markets and corporate earnings.

FNB Stockbroking and Portfolio Management View

    • This ETN provides investors with a low-cost option to gain exposure to a broad spectrum of large-cap European equities. The index presents a constructive near-term investment case supported by improving fundamentals and still-reasonable valuations. Valuations remain attractive relative to global peers, with a forward PE of ~15.6 times (S&P 500: 22 times) and an attractive ~3.0% dividend yield (S&P 500: 1.14%).
    • The outlook is further underpinned by strong earnings momentum as well as supportive macro policy as significant German fiscal expansion - alongside broader infrastructure and defence spending - could stimulate regional growth.
    • From a sector perspective, financials are positioned as a key earnings engine given strong profitability and capital returns, while AI and technology, led by names like ASML, continue to provide structural upside through sustained capex and margin resilience.
    • It is notable that external risks are currently elevated, including ongoing geopolitical tensions and slowing global trade, while political uncertainty in France and questions around the quality of fiscal spending are key risks to monitor.

The FNB ETNs

FNB has a range of locally listed exchange-traded notes (ETNs) that track the performance of globally listed shares, indices and funds. For example, FNB's Netflix ETNs (NFETNC and NFETNQ) track the performance of the US listed Netflix share through an instrument listed on the JSE. If the Netflix share price increases so will the price of the local FNB Netflix ETNs. By investing in the FNB Netflix ETNs you benefit from the movement of the global Netflix share without having to take your money offshore or having to spend a large amount of money to buy a single share.
