Global Trade Idea - Lowe's Companies (LOW US) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein, Khumbulani Kunene

We enter a long position with a target price of $228 and a stop-loss of $187.

Lowe's Companies is a United States (US) home improvement retailer serving homeowners, do-it-yourself (DIY) customers and professional (Pro) contractors. The company sells products for home repair, maintenance, remodelling and construction and supports customers through online and in-store services, installation and project advice.

Lowe's operates nearly 1 750 stores across the US and provides a wide range of products for construction, maintenance, repair, and decorating. Overall, the business is closely linked to housing activity, household spending and demand for home improvement projects.

Technically, the price at the lower range of the Detrended Price Oscillator (DPO) makes the stock an interesting candidate for a long position (see larger insert on the main chart). The DPO, which highlights cyclical price movements, has since moved higher following a fall towards the lower statistical band, which may indicate that downside pressure is easing and that a mean-reversion rebound is possible.

A series of green Heikin-Ashi candles also supports a bullish case for the stock (see smaller insert on the main chart) as it suggests that the average weekly price is rising. The current price at ~$198.53 is also above the marked bullish flip level of $188.12, which adds support to the short-term bullish view.

The price remains below its 200-day and 200-week simple moving average (SMA) which acts as an important resistance level. A decisive break above the 200-day SMA would indicate a strong confirmation supporting the bullish stance.

The company is well positioned to deliver stable earnings and dividend growth over the medium term, supported by an improving housing market. Growth should also be underpinned by the continued expansion of its loyalty ecosystem, MyLowe's Rewards, and its growing retail media platform, which extends its reach to consumers across channels such as Roku, DoorDash, Reddit, TikTok and YouTube.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical analysis:

    • The lower panel is the Relative Strength Index (RSI) backcross signal from oversold readings. This pattern highlights points where the RSI moved back above its oversold threshold, commonly set at 30. RSI compares the size of recent price gains with recent losses and a drop below 30 would suggest that selling has been unusually strong, while a breach back above 30 may indicate that selling pressure is easing and buyers are beginning to return.
    • Fading downside price momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram and the recent upwards trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator supports our bullish view.
    • Our recommended entry range is $195.00 to $201.00, or as close as possible to $198.53 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $228, representing ~14.4% upside from current levels. According to forward calculations of the RSI indicator, the share will be overbought at $300.00, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is end of December 2026, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $187, or 5.8% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $201.

Fundamental view:

    • Lowe's operates as a single segment focused on home improvement retail with offerings spanning across categories like appliances, lumber, and garden supplies, featuring national brands alongside private labels such as Kobalt and allen+roth.
    • The company's omnichannel network integrates in-store, online (Lowes.com), on-site, and contact centre channels. Its supply chain is supported by over 120 distribution facilities.
    • Lowe's strategy is centred on its "Total Home" initiative, which focuses on serving both Pro and DIY customers, with the key pillars being strong Pro penetration, accelerating online sales, expanding home services, creating a loyalty ecosystem, and increasing space productivity.
    • In 2Q26, total sales jumped 8% to $26 billion, driven by a strong performance from Pro and home services sales, as well as double-digit growth in online sales, partially offset by persistent DIY macro pressures.
    • Looking ahead, management anticipates the trading environment for the remainder of the year to be challenging, due to higher inflation and increased interest rates. As such, guidance for the full year have been revised with total sales expected to come in at $92 billion (previously: $92 billion to $94 billion.
    • From a risk perspective, elevated interest rates have led to historic lows in housing turnover as fewer people buying and moving into new homes meant a sharp reduction in large remodel projects. DIY generates ~65% of total revenue and recent sticky inflation and economic uncertainty have squeezed household budgets.
