Local Trade Idea - Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBO) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein, Mmamosa Khanye

We enter a long position with a target price of R167.00 and a stop-loss of R136.00.

Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon is a diversified construction and civil engineering group with exposure to building, infrastructure, roads and earthworks projects across Southern Africa and the United Kingdom (UK).

The group works across commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects, including data centres, renewable energy, mining and transport infrastructure. As a project-based business, its performance depends on securing contracts, managing construction costs and delivering work efficiently.

Technically, the price in an upward sloping linear regression channel pattern makes the share an interesting candidate for a long position (see first insert on the main chart). The share is currently trading near the lower boundary of an upward-sloping regression channel, a level that may act as dynamic support and signal continuing buying interest if the price stabilises or rebounds.

The latest bullish swing period also supports the trade idea (see second insert on the main chart). The heatmap shows a recent increase in bullish swing periods, suggesting buying interest may be re-emerging and supporting the potential for a share price recovery. However, the signal remains mixed, and stronger bullish confirmation would require sustained higher highs, higher lows, and additional bullish swing readings.

Fading downside price momentum as reflected by the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) and the recent steep rise in the OBV indicator, supports our bullish stance.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical analysis:

    • The lower panel is the instances when the Relative Strength Index (RSI) had bullish divergences. The recent RSI bullish divergence signals suggest that selling pressure may be weakening despite the share testing lower levels, supporting the potential for stabilisation or recovery. However, this remains an early indication of improving momentum and would require confirmation from stronger price action, volume trends, or other bullish signals.
    • Our recommended entry range is R143.00 to R147.00, or as close as possible to R145.00 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is R167.00, representing ~15.2% upside from current levels.
    • Our proposed time to exit is mid-January 2027, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below R136.00, or 6.3% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above R147.00.

Fundamental view:

    • Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon is divided into three main segments, namely: Building and Civil Engineering which contributes 63.3% of revenue; Roads, Earthworks and Infrastructure (30.8%) and; Sales of Construction Materials (5.9%).
    • Geographically, the company has three reportable geographic segments: South Africa, Rest of Africa and the UK which contribute 68.2%, 11.1% and 20.7%, respectively.
    • In April 2026, Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon Construction received unconditional Competition Tribunal approval to acquire Zamori 172 (Pty) Ltd, giving Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon sole control of the solar-focused project management and specialist installation business. The acquisition strengthens WBHO's in-house renewable-energy capabilities, particularly in the design, engineering, procurement and installation of utility-scale solar projects.
    • Thematically, the commitment by the South African government to invest in infrastructure and infrastructure backlogs in the rest of Africa could be a positive for this company.
    • Looking at full-year results for the period ended 30 June 2026, headline earnings per share (HEPS) grew 0.2% to R22.83 with a revenue decline of 0.6% year-on-year (y/y) to R28.3 billion, in line with consensus forecasts, as growth in South Africa (+1%) and the UK (+3.6%) was more than offset by a 14.7% decline in the Rest of Africa.
    • Order book levels were broadly maintained rather than showing outright growth, but the underlying mix of strong gains in Civil Engineering and Building order books, alongside several preferred-bidder positions in renewable energy was well received by the market.
    • From a risk perspective, the company has established exposure to building and civil engineering, but remains relatively underexposed to the power sector, which presents a potential growth opportunity in South Africa. However, low industry margins, execution or pricing errors, client disputes, and local challenges such as community unrest and crime could adversely affect project delivery and profitability.
