Global Trade Idea - Dow Inc. (DOW US) - BUY

By Peet Serfontein and Khumbulani Kunene

We enter a long position with a target price of $38 and a stop-loss of $28.

Dow Inc. is a leading producer and distributor of chemical products. The company manufactures and supplies chemicals for liquid injection moulding, architecture fabrication, leather, textiles, automobiles, rubber consumer goods, and food industries.

Headquartered in Midland, Michigan, Dow serves customers worldwide in industries ranging from food packaging and construction to automotive manufacturing, electronics and personal care. The company combines large-scale manufacturing, scientific expertise and product innovation to develop more efficient and sustainable material solutions.

Technically, the price is currently at a historical trading zone, which makes the stock an attractive buying opportunity (see the insert on the main chart). The volume profile strengthens the bullish case for Dow given that the current price of ~$30.46 is positioned just above a significant high-volume area between roughly $28.00 and $30.00. A sustained increase in demand, supported by stronger trading volumes and a decisive breakout would confirm the transition into the mark-up phase.

The stock appears to be in the accumulation phase of the Wyckoff price cycle, where selling pressure gradually weakens and institutional investors may begin building positions within a defined trading range.

Fading downside momentum according to the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) histogram and the recent sideway trajectory of the on-balance volume (OBV) indicator supports our bullish view.

Buy/sell rationale

Technical analysis:

    • The lower panel is the Bullish trending period for the stock. This pattern highlights that the stock's position within a bullish trending period, measured in weeks, strengthens the case for further upside. This pattern further indicates when the positive trend began and tracks how long the share has remained in this phase.
    • Our recommended entry range is $29.00 to $31.00, or as close as possible to $30.46 - a drop below this range would indicate a substantial change in price dynamics, giving reason to negate the trade idea.
    • Our target price is $38, representing ~24.7% upside from current levels. According to forward calculations of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator, the share will be overbought at $45.00, making our profit target realistic.
    • Our proposed time to exit is mid-December 2026, but investors can adjust for a longer or shorter time horizon, depending on price behaviour.
    • A drop below $28, or -8.1% below current levels, would suggest weakening technicals, and a stop-loss is recommended at this level.
    • We expect moderate price fluctuations and suggest a medium at-risk allocation for this trade. Increase exposure for a break above $31.

Fundamental view:

    • Dow is a leading United States-based materials science company that operates as one of the largest chemical and plastics producers in the world.
    • The company operates primarily through three segments, namely Packaging & Speciality Plastic (~54% of revenue), Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure (~26 or revenue) and Performance Materials & Coatings (~20% of revenue).
    • Dow does not have one significant customer but operates as a business-to-business (B2B) foundational supplier with its customer base consisting of thousands of manufacturers across diverse sectors.
    • In 2024, Dow acquired Circulus, a Houston-based plastics recycler that specializes in converting post-consumer olefin plastics into high-grade polyethylene (PE) resins. This acquisition added ~50 000 metric tonnes of recycling capacity to fulfil Dow's circular-packaging goals.
    • Per recent 2Q26 results, net sales jumped 20% to $12.1 billion, reflecting increases in all operating segments and regions. Operating EBIT improved to $1.6 billion from a loss of $21 million in the prior year. Profitability was driven by a strong recovery in Packaging & Speciality Plastics on the back of higher integrated margins due to higher polyethylene prices contributing to margin expansion and tailwinds from the company's self-help initiatives.
    • Looking ahead, management will continue to focus on building a more agile and resilient company that sets a new competitive standard and will do so by advancing three priorities, namely: growth and innovation in attractive end markets, investing in and strengthening its portfolio, and ensuring balanced capital allocation.
    • From a risk perspective, Dow faces an array of macro, operational, and structural risks intrinsic to its status as a massive global chemical and plastics manufacturer. These challenges range from highly cyclical market volatility to intense geopolitical exposures.
